Micropolitan Statistical Area

A Micropolitan Statistical Area is a relatively new set of statistical areas designated by the U.S. Census Bureau as having at least one urban cluster of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000 population, plus adjacent territory that has a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured by commuting ties.

Micropolitan Statistical Areas are defined in terms of whole counties (or equivalent areas.) About 10% of the U.S. population resides in Micropolitan Statistical Areas. 693 counties are in the 576 Micropolitan Statistical areas.
