Cookie

A cookie is a piece of text stored on a user's computer by their web browser. The browser stores the cookie information on the hard drive so that when the browser is closed and reopened at a later date the cookie information is still available.

 Marketers use cookies to collect demographic information about who is visiting the site, store site preferences, understand what visitors search for on the site, save shopping cart contents, display customized content for visitors, prepare product recommendations, monitor what ads visitors see and how often visitors them, etc.  
 
Cookies cannot read the visitor's hard drive to collect information; they can only access the information that was stored by the cookie. Site visitors can manually delete cookie information in the browser, or turn off the cookie feature.
