App

The term “app” is an abbreviation for 'application software.'

Although application software can run on a computers, mobile devices, or within social networks, the term ‘app’ is most often used to describe software programs that are downloaded and installed by users on wireless devices such as mobile phones (particularly smartphones), and tablets  (such as the iPad.)

In the mobile world an app is typically a utility that focuses on a specific interest such as weather forecasts, sports scores, or recipes. Apps can be ads themselves or serve as branding vehicles. They can also carry ads. 

Many mobile apps are free to users, deriving their revenue from ads that run on the app, while other apps require a small payment, usually no more than a few dollars.
